Ladies-Only Open Mat

Today we hosted the first ladies-only open mat at Relson Gracie Connecticut, which was the second in a series started by the women of IMBCT. In attendance were 24 women representing 10 different academies: Relson Gracie CT, Team Link, IMBCT/Kore BJJ, CT Krav Maga MMA, AMP, Underdog MMA, Fighting Arts Academy, Manchester Bushido, Ronin BJJ, and Soulfighters BJJ/JSA.

A group of us arrived early for this morning’s “Yoga with Steve” session, which provided a nice stretch to start the day. Shortly after 10:00, we transitioned into a group warmup followed by continuous intervals of 3-minute rolls and 1-minute rest periods. Everyone was friendly and respectful both on and off the mats, which created a great atmosphere.

Between rounds, many of us had a chance to chat and swap stories about our training, our challenges as women in the sport, and the importance of supporting each other regardless of team affiliation. I think it’s safe to say that everyone had a great time, so if you couldn’t make it today - and especially if your team isn’t on the list above - make sure you join us for the next one! Rumor has it that Ronin will likely be hosting in a month or two.

I’d like to extend a huge “thank you” to everyone who helped organize and promote this event, as well as all the ladies who participated. There were definitely more of us today compared to last time, and I both hope and expect that attendance will continue to grow.
